Discussion on Specification Support of AI/ML for Beam Management
Summary
This document from Indian Institute of Technology addresses AI/ML for beam management in NR air interface, providing responses to RAN2 questions and proposing specification support mechanisms. It contains 8 proposals and 5 observations covering signaling procedures, performance monitoring, and resource configuration.
Position
IIT advocates FOR mandatory NW-side additional conditions in beam management, supporting Option 1 for UE-side model inference with CSI-ReportConfig framework. They push FOR implicit L1/L2 signaling through performance thresholds rather than explicit signaling, and advocate FOR using full Set A beams for performance monitoring. They support leveraging existing CSI framework for resource configuration across both network-side and UE-side models.
Key proposals
- Proposal 1 (Sec 1): The gNB is required to provide configurations, other than NW-side additional conditions information, about supporting conditions to enable UE to select the applicable functionalities.
- Proposal 2 (Conclusion): L1/L2 signaling for functionality activation/deactivation is needed. However, the signaling can be implicit in the form of thresholds for model performance metrics to activate/deactivate the functionality.
- Proposal 3 (Sec 2.1): The prediction accuracy metric is Accuracy (Top K) = 100*(number of correctly predicted beams in Top K beams)/(K).
- Proposal 4 (Sec 2.1): Use full set of beams in Set A to compute metrics for performance monitoring.
- Proposal 5 (Sec 2.1): For BM-Case1 and with Set A as monitoring resource set, the window for calculation is duration of a single measurement of Set A.
- Proposal 6 (Sec 2.2): At least for the monitoring Type 1 Option 2 of UE-side model monitoring (when applicable), we recommend monitoring resource set(s) to be configured within CSI report configuration used for inference and the monitoring resource set is full set A or partial Set A (other than Set B).
- Proposal 7 (Sec 1): Regarding options for applicability for inference for UE-side model, we recommend Option 1.
- Proposal 8 (Sec 6): The contents of inference report, among the options agreed, should be selected based on overhead and the effectiveness of content in performance evaluation.
- Observation 1 (Sec 1): For beam management, the NW-side additional conditions are mandatory. UE needs information about NW-side additional conditions to decide applicable functionalities along with other configurations from NW about the supporting conditions.
- Observation 3 (Sec 1): NW-side additional conditions are part of inference configuration.
