Discussion on aspects of integration of sensing with communication
From Spreadtrum
Summary
This Spreadtrum/UNISOC document provides analysis on integrating sensing with 6G communication, presenting 2 observations and 6 proposals. It evaluates the feasibility of reusing existing 6G reference signals for sensing, highlights the need for dedicated sensing reference signals, and addresses sensing measurement/report configuration including reusing Rel-20 agreements.
Position
Spreadtrum proposes studying the feasibility of reusing existing 6G DL and UL reference signals (CSI-RS, PRS, DMRS, PTRS, SRS) for sensing, while identifying major challenges including low unambiguous range/velocity and unknown precoding matrices in bistatic scenarios. They propose studying the necessity of dedicated DL/UL sensing reference signals, considering either complete new designs or incremental enhancements to existing signals like increasing CSI-RS density or reconfiguring PTRS/DM-RS. They propose reusing the Rel-20 agreement on measurement report content (Level A through D) as the 6G sensing starting point and studying feasibility and overhead of air-interface reporting for each level. They require sensing reference signals and measurements/reports to support periodic, semi-persistent, and aperiodic configurations, and propose studying sensing processing timeline/unit (SPU) parameters including channel estimation time and sensing algorithm execution time.
Key proposals
- Proposal 1 (Sec 2.1.1): Study the feasibility of 6G DL and UL reference signals for sensing as a starting point.
- Proposal 2 (Sec 2.1.2): Study the necessity of the design of dedicated DL and UL sensing reference signal. Two design approaches can be considered. The first is a complete new design of reference signal, and the other is incremental enhancements to existing 6G reference signals.
- Proposal 3 (Sec 2.2): Reuse the R20 agreement on measurement report content from RAN as the starting point for 6G sensing. Study the feasibility and overhead of reusing the R20 agreement for reporting through the air-interface, respectively for Level A, B, C and D.
- Proposal 4 (Sec 2.2): If 6G reference signals are reused for sensing, a unified report configuration for sensing and communication is expected to be designed.
- Proposal 5 (Sec 2.2): Sensing reference signals should support periodic, semi-persistent and aperiodic configurations. Sensing should support periodic, semi-persistent and aperiodic measurements and reports.
- Proposal 6 (Sec 2.2): Study the processing time-related parameters for sensing, e.g., sensing processing timeline/unit (SPU).
