Discussion on Evaluation assumptions for 6GR air interface
From Ofinno
Summary
This document from Ofinno at RAN1#123 provides 9 Observations and 9 Proposals on evaluation assumptions for 6G radio, covering traffic model extensions (AI/ML, immersive, FTP) and NTN deployment parameters (carrier frequencies, orbits, bandwidths).
Position
Ofinno proposes that AI/ML traffic models for 6GR evaluations should follow Option-1b, transforming application-layer tokens into physical layer packets, while keeping Option-1c as a possibility depending on SA4 input. They propose extending existing XR traffic models from TR 38.838 for immersive communication services including advanced XR and haptics media services. For FTP models, they propose introducing statistically selected variable packet sizes and associating each packet with a packet delay budget that depends on packet size, arguing against unnecessarily complicating the models. For NTN evaluations, they propose specific Ku-band frequencies around 14/12 GHz based on existing 5G bands n248 and n506, and recommend both transparent and regenerative payload types. They propose a full set of satellite orbits (LEO at 300/600/1200 km, MEO with 2-3 altitudes, GEO) and specify both maximum and typical system bandwidths across L-band, S-band, Ku-band, and Ka-band.
Key proposals
- Proposal 1 (Sec 3.3): Introduce variable packet size in both FTP model 1 and FTP model 3. The variable packet size is statistically selected from two or more file sizes.
- Proposal 3 (Sec 4.1): Consider Ku-band frequencies around 14/12 GHz (UL/DL) for 6GR NTN evaluations.
- Proposal 4 (Sec 4.2): Consider LEO, MEO, and GEO satellite orbits for 6GR NTN evaluations.
- Proposal 5 (Sec 4.2): Consider satellite altitudes of 300 km, 600 km, and 12000 km for LEO, and 2 or 3 typical satellite altitudes for MEO for 6GR NTN evaluations.
- Proposal 6 (Sec 4.2): Consider both transparent payload type and regenerative payload type for 6GR NTN evaluations.
- Proposal 7 (Sec 4.2): Consider following maximum system bandwidths for 6GR NTN evaluations: around 1.5 GHz and 2 GHz: 2*30 MHz (DL+UL), around 12/14 GHz: 2*400 MHz (DL+UL), around 20/30 GHz: 2*400 MHz (DL+UL).
- Proposal 8 (Sec 4.2): Consider following system bandwidths for 6GR NTN evaluations: around 1.5 GHz and 2 GHz: 2*20 MHz and 2*30 MHz (DL+UL), around 12/14 GHz: 2*100 MHz, 2*200 MHz, and 2*400 MHz (DL+UL), around 20/30 GHz: 2*100 MHz, 2*200 MHz, and 2*400 MHz (DL+UL).
- Proposal 9 (Sec 4.2): Assume FDD in all carrier frequency ranges for initial 6GR NTN evaluations.
- Proposal 2 (Sec 3.3): Associate each packet in both FTP model 1 and FTP model 3 with a packet delay budget (PDB), which depends on the packet size.
